National Identity Crisis

A well-organized political community generally goes bout it's business in a largely unselfconscious manner. It has a reasonably clear idea of what it is and what it stands for, and relies on this to conduct it's collective affaris. When disputes occur from time to time, it generally knows how to debate and resolve them. A difficult situation rises when it undergoes massive economic and demographic changes, faces grave internal or external threats, is recovering from a traumatic period, or is paralysed by irreconcilable groups fighting bitterly over how it should be constituted.
